Calibrated Stone
Calibrated stone is all the same thickness, we only sell calibrated paving. If it is not calibrated then every stone is a different thickness and it is much harder to lay. The mortar bed beneath every stone needs to be adjusted to give a flat finished surface.
Handcut / Natural / Riven
These terms are often used to mean the same thing. Stone is split along its natural grain this gives an uneven surface that provides a rustic finish. The surface is easy to walk on and the natural variation provides extra grip when wet compared to a smooth stone.
The edgework is usually handcut, this adds to the natural feel of the stone.
Tumbled Stone
These are Handcut / Riven stones that have been treated in a tumbling process. This involves placing the stones in a machine, along with abrasive materials like sand or grit, and then rotating them for an extended period. As the stones tumble against each other and the abrasive material, their rough edges and surfaces gradually wear away, resulting in a smooth and rounded appearance.
Sawn Edge
These stones have been cut by a saw either on the surface and /or the edges to give a straight flat finish. This allows the stone to be laid with smaller joints.
Porcelain Tiles - Anti-slip rating
The higher the R number the greater resistance of the tiles.
R13 is usually used in commercial applications where the surface is often wet (Pool areas, showers etc) , R12 and R11 are similar and suitable for outdoor paving. R10 is not recommended for areas that regularly get wet.
